When should I neuter my pet?

Desexing your pet can help prevent unwanted litters and reduce the number of homeless animals, which is great for our furry friends and the community!

It can also improve your pet’s health and increase their lifespan. Here are some reasons why:

  • We recommend desexing when your pet is at least 6 months old.
  • For female pets, spaying can reduce the risk of mammary tumours, tumours in the uterus, ovaries, and cervix, as well as other medical issues like infections.
  • For male pets, castrating can lower the risk of prostatic diseases and perianal tumours, and completely eliminate the risk of testicular cancer.
  • However, it’s important to note that there are some risks associated with desexing, such as urinary incontinence for pets desexed before 6 months of age.

When considering desexing your pet, keep in mind:

  • Some male pets may take up to six months or more for their testicles to descend into the scrotum.
  • Cats and dogs weighing less than 1kg should not be desexed due to the high anaesthetic risk.
  • Evidence suggests that large breed dogs desexed prior to six months are more likely to develop hip dysplasia, which is an abnormal formation of the hip that can also be affected by environmental factors.
